Rupert the Bear was created by Mary
Tourtel and made his debut as a comic strip star in
the Daily Express newspaper in 1920 with a story called
"The Adventures of a Little Lost Bear".
He was an immediate hit with his target audience and
in the 1950s the Daily Express newspaper decided they
had enough strips to publish a collected work.
Although there have been several different artists
over the years since Mary Tourtel's retirement in 1935
the character has remained pretty much unchanged and
he is still the quintessential mischevous middle English
schoolboy, albeit in bear form.
Rupert the Bear toys and teddies are
extremely collectable and eBay would be the best bet
to find any.
